Some people need to rehome their dogs due to unforseen circumstances. Using a reputable Rescue helps to ensure that the new adopter has been properly screened and qualified and a good match is made for both the dog and the adopters.
Here is the Process that Lake Tahoe Wolf Rescue uses to find new homes.
PLEASE READ ALL THIS CAREFULLY:
The owner first needs to email us Medium-resolution Jpeg photos of the dog they want to rehome in the same email as the Q&A [below]. We ask for a $20 donation to list your dog and spend time finding a new home. It is a lot of work and takes time and expense. This donation can be paid HERE or by mailing a check made out to LTWR. Our address is in CONTACT US on the home page. If transport is needed to a new home, we ask that these costs are covered as well.
Our network has a wonderful success rate, but it does not happen overnight. It takes time to find the best match, so please give us as much advance notice as possible. You can always change your mind and keep your companion, but if you wait too long to list him/her, we may not be able to find a home by your deadline.
For Rescue Groups or Shelters, there is no $20 donation fee.
A Potential Adopter completes our short questionnaire and if they appear to be a good match, we then do extensive phone interviews and a Home Check. If the adopter is qualified for the right experience and approved, they must fill out our formal 6-page Adoption Application and references are checked. If needed, transportation is arranged with both Adopter and Previous Owner. After adoption, we ask for photos and updates to ensure the dog is doing well and do so for the life of the dog. If for any reason the adopter can no longer keep the animal, our Adoption Contract allows us to repossess the dog and/or help rehome.
If you would like us to help find your dog a new home, please fill out the Q&A below and email it to us.
Please remember that all efforts should be used to try to keep your dog. Consider going to dog classes for basic training, giving more exercise, reinforcing your fencing, hiring a trainer or dog walker. If your dog is misbehaving, consulting with a trainer that is experienced with northern breeds would be advised, as well as using training books and videos. There are hundreds of wolfdogs and northern breeds in shelters that are being killed. Most sanctuaries are full and good homes are difficult to find due to the lagging economy. We hope you will do everything you can to try to keep your animals.
Please know that wolfdogs are illegal to own in many counties throughout the United States. If there is a complaint from a neighbor for howling, getting loose, killing or injuring a cat or dog - some Animal Control shelters will confiscate a dog regardless of whether it is in a legal county or not — especially if it even looks like a wolfdog, or an owner claims it is. Labeling your dog a wolfdog can endanger his or her life. It is always possible that the dog is from a breeder who produced a "designer" dog that looks and acts like a wolfdog. It is better to list your dog as Malamute / Husky / Shepherd if you are not absolutely sure with a DNA test.

FOR TAKING PHOTOS, FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS PLEASE!
attach medium resolution, individual jpeg photos, not collages.
— Face shot.
— STANDING side shot. We need to see the FULL conformation of dog from nose to tail as close as possible. Make sure STANDING photos show feet well.
— Good lighting so we can see coat.
— Good color in background (i.e. grass) or contrast.
— Please make sure photos are not blurry, overexposed, or too dark.
— DO NOT take the photos standing looking down on the dog, but crouch to their eye level.
The better/more attractive the photos, the more response from Potential Adopters. Please send a few photos so we have a choice, and send a few more as time goes by so we can freshen up their post.
Please seek professional help for all behavior problems. Work with your dog in a calm, patient and consistent manner before putting your pet up for adoption. Consider dog training videos [watch Cesar Millan on YouTube]. There is so much competition for good homes and it is extremely hard on the dogs to lose their loved ones.
